Surf Report11/19-11/23
Aloha! This week we had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Watkins. Mrs. Watkins will be joining us next semester as our student teacher-some of the students remember Mrs. Watkins from last year as she did her practicum teaching with Ms. Fierro. She will be here when we come back from winter break through the remainder of the spring semester. This is her final semester of college and will be required to do solo teaching experience. I will continue to be in the classroom and supporting her and the students along the way. We will be working as a team to deliver instruction to the students. We kicked off our ice cream sundae challenge and have students well on their way earning parts of their ice cream sundae! This week we have a super short week due to Thanksgiving break. We will be doing some fun activities and wrapping up other things we have been working on like our area and perimeter robots. I am so thankful for each one of your kiddos and and so blessed to be their teacher this year. I hope that you all have a very enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving making memorable memories with your loved ones! Mahalo, Mrs. DeBois 11/5-11/11/9
Aloha! I forgot to publish last weeks post and I apologize! This surf report will be a combination of both. We enjoyed having students from Campo Verde's BioMed class come and teach us about the heart. We got to see a sheep's heart and hold it and they also completed a fun craftivity with us as well. We want to thank Preston's mom for coming in with her students! We loved it! This past week was a super fun week too. We had our Halloween party and a big thank you to Mrs. Hauk for organizing a fun afternoon and all of our parent volunteers for taking time to come in and help run it! We couldn't have done it without all of you! This week is a busy week ahead. We will have some students leaving our class for a bit for further gifted testing and we have a school wide assembly on Thursday to honor and thank Veterans who have served our country. We have been talking a lot about what November symbolizes-thankfulness and how we are so thankful for those who gave their lives and put their lives on the line for us to enjoy our freedoms that we have. Here's to another week! Mahalo, Mrs. DeBois 10/22-10/26
Aloha! We had a great first week back and start into 2nd quarter. We dove into our plant unit, by learning about classification through classifying beans. Students also began working on their blue prints for their zoo exhibit that they are creating that contains 3 landforms. Be sure to ask your kiddo which landforms they are including in their shoebox exhibit! In math, we continued working on our multiplication facts learning how to multiply and divide with 10, 2, and 9. During Language Arts, we discussed foreshadowing while we read the book, "Substitute Creacher" and sharing flashbacks and learned how flashbacks are used within reading as well. This week is Red Ribbon week! To celebrate making good choices, we will be having a spirit week! We will kick off the week with wearing RED on Monday. Listed below is the rest of the week's spirit days: Tuesday-where you like to visit Wednesday- superhero Thursday- western gear Friday- school spirit Here's to another great week of learning! Mahalo, Mrs. DeBois 10/15-10/19
Aloha! I hope everyone had an AMAZING and relaxing Fall Break! We started our break in California for my high school best friend's wedding in San Luis Obispo. The rest of our break was full of catching up on stuff around our house and spending time as a family. My husband had the week off too, so we all enjoyed our family time going to the park and having dance parties in our living room to "Baby Shark"-its Nani and Knox' favorite song at the moment. :) We have a shortened week coming back to school and getting back in the groove of things. We will be reviewing a few procedures that may have been forgotten over break and get right back on our learning journey. We have gifted testing coming up this Thursday. A letter was sent home and I have included the gifted form on the right side bar and a hard copy was sent home. Thank you to those who were able to make it to Parent-Teacher Conferences. I enjoyed meeting with you and going over your child's progress thus far and work together to set some goals for your child for the remainder of 3rd grade. During conferences, I mentioned two new programs that we are utilizing in the classroom and that you may utilize at home. I will be sending out more information out on those programs this week on what they are and how to utilize them at home. I cannot wait to see the kiddos on Tuesday, I have missed seeing their smiling faces!! Mahalo, Mrs. DeBois 9/17-9/21
Aloha! Another week in the books! As we wind down the first quarter-wait, WHAT?! We are full force into reading centers and math centers. We have worked on our rough drafts of our personal narrative writing assignment. We have been working hard on taking our watermelon idea and narrowing down to our seed-our moment in time. We reviewed our first writing piece and saw made goals after reflecting on our marks on our rubrics. Our math groups are starting to move along at different paces. One of my favorite things about centers is that once we get our routines and procedures down, we get to move at the pace of the kids' needs. Subtracting with regrouping gotcha stuck? That's okay-let's slow it down....you're ready for fractions-lets break out the pie! The hardest thing about getting our centers up and running is getting our kiddos to be self-directed so that I can really spend time with my small groups. I think we are finally there! We also had fun flying our paper airplanes and making modifications to see if they would fly farther as we continue our STEM journey. We will be heading into our Plants unit right after fall break. Next week, we have half days on Thursday and Friday with a release time at 12:40 for parent-teacher conferences. The link is in last week's update, if you still would like to sign up for a time. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! Mahalo, Mrs. DeBois 9/10-9/14
Aloha! This week was a busy one! The kids looked great in their picture day attire-I always love picture day and seeing everyone dress up. I was so proud of our class for being respectful during the process and quiet in the halls so others could hear the directions that were being given. We even got a compliment from Dr. Henry! Woo-hoo! We also had an unannounced fire drill this week. We were were very prepared and did a good job evacuating our classroom quickly and waiting for the all clear call. During language arts, we learned a new word making game-Boggle. We played the Mrs. DeBois version where they are just making words and not worried about the letters connecting. I don't want them to get discouraged and get excited about finding new words. We are well on our way to meeting our 40 book challenge. We already have some students on book 4! That is awesome :) A couple reminders: Please help me in reminding your kiddos to check their mailboxes each day for papers and fliers coming home are placed in there. I mention it during pack up, but sometimes, it helps to hear it at home too. Also, please ask for their weekly self reflections. This helps us all be on the same page. Parent-Teacher conferences are coming up. I am looking forward to meeting with you to discuss accomplishments and set goals for the remainder of the year. If you have not signed up for a conference, I have included the link to the sign up at the bottom of this page. Conference sign up Enjoy your weekend! Mahalo, Mrs. DeBois 9/4-9/7
Aloha! I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! Mr. DeBois had to work all weekend, so Nani, Knox and I had some great quality time doing dance parties and hanging out with their cousins this weekend. I am ready to see everyone's faces tomorrow! Please remember to ask for your child's weekly self reflection on Fridays. It is a great insight to how their week was in class. Friday we had a fun time playing a get to know you board game with our first grade buddies-we look forward to our buddy time on Fridays! We have completed two days of our reading rotations. I had the opportunity to be facilitator during their group times and it went pretty well. We have a few kinks to work out but we are getting there! This week I am hoping to be able to really start working with groups and dig into reading strategies and skills. Students started presenting their inventors and I was super impressed with the information that they shared. I even had one group get a new book from the library to add more to their presentation! We will be finishing up those presentations this week in class. Friday we will have a guest teacher in our classroom. I will be traveling to California for my best friends bridal shower. We have been best friends since junior high and I am so excited to get the opportunity to celebrate her! I have the upmost faith in our class that they will treat the guest teacher with the same respect that they show me. I am hoping to still get those reflections out this week, but we may put them off until next week-we will see how this week plays out! In the next week and half or so, I will be sending out a link for sign-ups for parent teacher conferences. Please be on look out for that. I am looking forward to sitting down with you and your 3rd grader to discuss their accomplishments and goals for this year! As always, please let me know if you have any questions. I appreciate your support! Mahalo, Mrs. DeBois 8/27-8/31
Aloha! Thank you all for being patient with me as I get my new website up and running! There is so much information on here that I felt would be good to have for you all, that it became a huge undertaking! If you feel that there is anything missing or would be good to add, please let me know! We are officially one month of school down. It has completely blew by! The students have done a great job of learning classroom routines and have been flexible as I learn along with them what works for all of us. We are still working on our voice levels and off task talking as a whole. Flexible seating has been going great. It is a learning curve, but one that we are improving on each day! We have met our first grade buddies and both classes are so excited to see each other on Fridays. Be sure to ask your child what their buddy's name is and something about them as we have been doing get to know you activities with them . We have completed our first in class project. The students have enjoyed learning about inventors and their innovations to society. Be sure to ask them about their inventors! We will be going into our first independent project next week, where the students will become the inventor. Look for more information next week! If you still have not filled out the back to school google forms, please do so. I have included the links at the bottom of the surf report. I have also included the link to the form from Mrs. Hauk, our Room Parent. Please click on that if you haven't done so and would like to volunteer.
